We are a newly formed nonprofit called Skillful Steps, focused on helping justice-involved and low-income adults access Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training, transportation, and wraparound career support. We have an active QuickBooks account but have not yet received our first large restricted/unrestricted grants.

We need advice from a fiscal strategist or nonprofit accountant on:
• Setting up proper restricted vs. unrestricted fund tracking in QuickBooks
• Understanding best practices for donor-advised funds (DAFs), in-kind contributions, and program-designated funds
• Building a compliant, funder-friendly chart of accounts
• How to organize financial reports that meet the needs of private donors, foundations, and community funders

Our goal is to prepare our nonprofit for scaling and audits, while staying compliant and ready for funding from foundations like GHCF, Gitlab Foundation, and unrestricted sources like MacKenzie Scott, DAFs, etc.

Skillful Steps is a newly established nonprofit organization committed to breaking cycles of generational poverty and reducing recidivism through life skills education, workforce development, and mentorship. While we are in the early stages of our journey, our vision is bold: to empower underserved individuals—such as veterans, foster care alumni, justice-involved individuals, and disconnected youth—with the tools and support needed to build self-sufficient, purpose-driven lives. Our current focus is on developing programs that provide practical job readiness training, personal development workshops, and one-on-one mentoring. We are actively building partnerships, expanding outreach, and laying the foundation for long-term impact in the Houston area and beyond.
