About the Opportunity

We need a volunteer to help define and scope a larger pro bono technology project for Historic Richland Cemetery, a historic African American cemetery in Greenville, South Carolina. The future system will need to connect information about people buried at the cemetery (WHO), City of Greenville cemetery/GIS location data (WHERE), and the archival records supporting each person's history (EVIDENCE).

During this 60-minute session, we want to clarify the problem statement, determine what should and should not be included in the larger project, identify the data, sample records, documentation, and organizational decisions we should prepare, and define the professional expertise and high-level deliverables the larger project will require.

An AmeriCorps VISTA member will ultimately help implement and document the system, so sustainability and knowledge transfer are important. We are not asking the volunteer to design or select a database during this session. Our goal is to leave the call with a clear scope and preparation checklist for the larger technology project.

Organization Mission

Leatherwood Matters strengthens historically underserved communities by preserving and bringing local history and culture to life. We connect people, places, stories, and historical records through community-based programs that combine history, arts, education, technology, and volunteer service. Our work preserves overlooked African American history, honors the contributions of veterans and other community members, expands access to cultural and educational resources, and creates opportunities for people facing economic barriers to participate in and benefit from these resources. Through partnerships with residents, volunteers, artists, students, nonprofits, and local government, we build lasting resources that preserve the past, connect generations, and strengthen communities for the future.
