Explore Possibility of a Financial Gift to spouse of Founder who recently passed away

Our founder recently passed away after many years of devoted service to our organization. As we navigate this transition, our Board would like to explore offering her spouse a legacy or appreciation gift. We want to ensure that any such gift is structured appropriately and fully aligned with nonprofit governance best practices — including avoiding private inurement or excess benefit concerns, following proper board approval processes, and documenting the decision correctly.

We are seeking a volunteer with experience in nonprofit management, governance, or compliance to help us think through whether and how this type of gift can be offered responsibly. We would appreciate guidance on the considerations involved, the steps we should take, and the documentation required to ensure we remain compliant and uphold the integrity of our mission.

Our Board President would like to participate in this consultation and is only available on Wednesdays, preferably during business hours. We are therefore hoping to connect with a consultant who is available to meet on Wednesdays.
