About the Opportunity

Spread the Vote and Civic Genius, both programs of the National Civic League, are launching Genius Guides - a long-term civic education project with the eventual goal of cataloguing every single elected office in America. Voter and civic education has a huge gap: so many people step into the voting booth and have no idea what all those local offices at the bottom of their ballot actually do. That info gap has an impact beyond Election Day as well; if you don't know how your local government works, you don't know where to turn when you need help, and you don't know how to make change when your community needs it. The Genius Guides aim to fill that gap, one state at a time, and empower citizens with the information they need to take civic action.

This kind of project represents a new scope for the National Civic League, which typically works with local governments and other organizations - we have very little experience marketing our resources to a broad general-public audience, and our dedicated marketing/comms capacity is extremely limited. We're looking for someone who understands the current social media landscape and is interested in the civic engagement aspect of this project. We are partnered with a voter information app, which will host the Guides on its platform and be a significant source of visibility - we want to capitalize on that visibility, as well as the project's timeliness given the upcoming elections.

We're looking for marketing and social media (especially social media!) support to plan the rollout of this project. Target timeline is to work on these deliverables in September - happy to start earlier if you're available - and execute the rollout in early October. We need:
--Marketing and socials strategy for the rollout
--A 2-4 week social media content calendar for the rollout (including copy, but we have capacity to assist with writing)
--Broad strokes of an ongoing social media strategy/ideas on where to go from here
We're especially interested in advice on how to leverage video. The content is text-based and we recognize that's not a preferred format in the current landscape.
