Help us strengthen our financial management practices! We are looking for a volunteer finance professional to assess our current financial situation, pricing strategy, and risk factors.
We'd also benefit from a volunteer's recommendations for creating a ‘rainy day fund,’ best practices for achieving a healthy annual surplus, or creating financial scenarios for periods of increased community need.
We predict that this finance project will take from 36-48 hours to complete. We're hoping that our pro bono partner will share three to five hours of their time each week with our team.
Noggin exists to give underserved students access to the kind of enrichment and academic support that too often depends on zip code or income — from free tutoring to hands-on programs like our Robotics Camp, which brings STEM education to kids who qualify for Medicaid/CHIP alongside paying families, side by side. Every dollar we steward carefully is a dollar that goes further toward a student getting help with reading, building their first robot, or presenting a business idea on a Shark Tank Jr. stage.
Noggin is actively working toward audit readiness. We have never undergone a formal financial audit, and as we grow our funding base and pursue larger institutional grants, we know that demonstrating audit-ready financial practices is essential. We need a skilled finance volunteer who can not only assess where we stand but help us get where we need to be.
This is a hands-on engagement. We are looking for someone who will work alongside us to:
Assess our current internal controls and identify gaps
Help us address those gaps — not just document them
Review and strengthen our existing financial policies and procedures
Draft or strengthen a Finance Committee charter
Document our financial processes in a way that supports transparency, accountability, and audit readiness
Build a prioritized roadmap of the remaining steps Noggin needs to take to be fully audit-ready
In short: your financial expertise won't just balance a spreadsheet — it'll directly protect and grow the resources that keep kids learning, building, and believing in themselves.
Who We Are Looking For:
A CPA or nonprofit finance professional with direct experience preparing nonprofits for financial audits. The ideal volunteer understands what auditors look for — segregation of duties, internal controls, board oversight requirements, restricted fund management, documentation standards, and financial reporting — and can assess Noggin's current practices against those standards. This is not a general bookkeeping or accounting project. We need someone who has been through the nonprofit audit process, knows where organizations commonly fall short, and can help us close those gaps before we engage an auditor.
Why This Matters:
Noggin is at a critical growth moment. We are diversifying our revenue, restructuring our board, and building the organizational systems that will allow us to scale. Audit readiness is not just a compliance checkbox — it is a signal to funders, partners, and donors that we are serious, accountable, and ready to grow. Your expertise will directly strengthen the infrastructure behind a program that is changing children's trajectories every week.
