About the Opportunity

The Shine Community is a nonprofit supporting nonverbal and neurodiverse members. With our members, families, and a speech-language pathologist, we built Ina — a communication tool (app + printed board) that helps a member show how they feel and share medical information with a caregiver or paramedic in an emergency.

A warmer, more polished design will help members and families trust and embrace the tool day to day, and help first responders read it quickly and calmly in an emergency. Cause area: disability / accessibility / health.

We have a working prototype of Ina, a communication app that helps nonverbal members of our community share how they feel and their key medical info in an emergency. It works — it just needs a designer's eye to make it warmer and more polished. This is a visual facelift, not a redesign: same screens, same flow, better look.

Goals:
- Refresh the visual design of the app's main screens so it feels calm, warm, and trustworthy.
- Keep the existing screen flow and structure — improve the look, not the layout logic.
- Deliver design direction our developer can implement (we are not asking you to build the app).

Deliverables:
- A refined color and typography treatment (we currently use Atkinson Hyperlegible, a legibility-engineered typeface).
- Spacing, layout, and iconography guidance applied consistently across the core screens: home, medical profile, "core words," body map, symptom questions, and the responder summary.
- A short style sheet or annotated mockups our developer can follow.

Skills needed: Visual/UI design, style guide creation, typography, color, iconography. Experience designing for accessibility, disability, AAC, health, or older adults is a strong plus — but a thoughtful generalist excited to design within accessibility constraints is welcome.

PLEASE READ — accessibility constraints:
Ina is used by people with communication and sensory differences, so accessibility outranks aesthetics. A great design here works within these rails:
- High contrast and large, legible type — WCAG 2.2 AA at minimum.
- Big touch targets (~64–72px and up) with clear, visible focus states.
- Low sensory load — a calm, muted palette; no busy or sudden animation; predictable layouts.
- Symbols + photos, no reading required — the design supports icons and members' own photos, not text-heavy screens.

This is the filter for a good fit: someone excited to make something beautiful inside these constraints

We'll provide:
- Access to the working prototype and our current style (colors, fonts, screen flow).
- A short call to walk you through who uses Ina and why.
- Quick, friendly feedback between drafts.

Estimated time: roughly 10–20 hours over about 3–4 weeks, remote, flexible around your schedule. We're open to starting with a short intro call, and we'll do a 20-minute check-in early on to confirm alignment on the accessibility constraints before design work gets underway.
