UX/UI Design for Pediatric Dog Bite Prevention Parent Portal
Initiative: Be BiteSmart℠
The Center for Canine Behavior Studies is seeking a volunteer UX/UI Designer to help shape a new parent-focused learning experience for Be BiteSmart, our pediatric dog bite prevention initiative.
This is not a coding role. Our website developer will implement the final designs in WordPress. We are looking for a designer with strong UX/UI and visual design skills who enjoys creating intuitive, engaging digital experiences for parents and families.
About the Project
Be BiteSmart is developing a dedicated Parent Section within the existing website to help families safely navigate life with children and dogs, from pregnancy through the preschool years.
Current Parent Section: https://www.bebitesmart.org/parents/
The Parent Section will cover topics such as:
• Preparing the family dog before a baby arrives
• Introducing a newborn
• Supporting children through crawling and early walking stages
• Preventing unsafe interactions such as hugging, kissing and face-to-face contact
• Teaching young children to respect a dog's space
Rather than feeling like a traditional veterinary or dog-training website, the Parent Section should reflect the warmth, trust and clarity expected from modern parenting, child development and family education platforms.
• Review the existing Parent Section and supporting strategy documents.
• Identify opportunities to improve the parent experience.
• Create an initial Figma concept for the Parent Section.
• Present your ideas and recommendations to the team.
Once the concept has been reviewed and agreed, we'll continue refining the design together.
Future Design Opportunities
If you're happy to continue working with our organization on future Projects, we'd love your help developing:
• A warm, parent-focused visual identity
• Parent-friendly navigation and user journeys
• Mobile-first page layouts and responsive design
• Typography, colour palette, imagery, illustration and visual hierarchy
• A reusable design system for guides, videos and future content
• Design specifications for implementation by our website developer
Your work will focus only on the Parent Section. The existing Be BiteSmart website outside this section is not part of this scope.
Coding or WordPress experience is not required.
We're Looking For Someone Who
• Has strong UX/UI and visual design skills
• Understands responsive and mobile-first design
• Understands information architecture and user journeys
• Can communicate design decisions clearly
• Enjoys collaborating with a multidisciplinary volunteer team
Experience designing for parenting, education, healthcare, nonprofits or family-focused brands would be an advantage, but is not essential.
Portfolio
Please include:
• A link to your UX/UI or design portfolio.
• If your portfolio includes collaborative projects, please briefly describe your role and contribution.
Examples involving parents, children, education, healthcare, nonprofits or consumer brands are especially welcome.
Optional: If there are any parenting or family-focused websites that inspire your design approach, we'd love to hear why.
Your First Deliverable
To keep the project focused and manageable, we're initially looking for help creating the first design concept.
Collaboration
The volunteer will collaborate with:
• Janet Spellman – Website Developer & Manager
• Chris P. Janelli – Executive Chairman, Center for Canine Behavior Studies, Inc.
