Develop AI-Powered Chat Translation for Online Tutoring Platform

Volunteers with UPchieve will work with our team to develop and implement a feature powered by AI that translates transcribed and typed messages in tutoring sessions into a student or volunteer's preferred language. For reference, imagine the dasher chat you sometimes get in DoorDash. It shows the message in your primary language, indicating it's translated, with an option to view the original message in the original language. Volunteers will deliver code or a prototype and documentation. Volunteers will need the following skills:
- Front-end: Vue
- Back-end: Node.js, Go
- Infrastructure/stack: PostgreSQL, Redis/Valkey
- Bonus: Translation APIs or AWS Chime transcription

UPchieve is an education technology nonprofit that provides free, 24/7 online tutoring and college counseling to low-income students in the United States. This feature will reduce language barriers for Title 1 students who don't speak English as a first language, making UPchieve’s tutoring and counseling more accessible and equitable. Volunteers will help expand access to certified tutors and support students’ chances to finish high school and pursue college.

Success will be a working prototype or code changes that translate in-session messages reliably, include a UI control to view originals, and come with implementation notes. Volunteers will collaborate with staff to define exact flows and test assumptions; specific materials and access will be provided during the volunteer process.
