Building Sustainable Budgeting Systems to Power Community Health Impact
Key tasks include:
-Reviewing our existing financial information and identifying gaps or areas for improvement
-Building a detailed annual operating budget that reflects organizational priorities
-Developing program-level budgets that align with our service delivery model
-Creating simple, user-friendly templates or tools that staff can update and maintain independently
-Providing guidance on budgeting best practices, including forecasting and scenario planning
We are hoping to come away from this engagement with practical, sustainable budgeting tools that will strengthen our financial planning, support decision-making, and position us for growth. The ideal volunteer will have experience in nonprofit finance, budgeting, or financial planning, and be comfortable translating financial concepts into accessible tools for a small team.
Our mission is to improve physical and mental health outcomes among Black men and dismantle the stigma surrounding health through access, awareness, advocacy, and action. However, to effectively scale programs like health festivals, screenings, and community-based wellness events, we need strong financial systems that allow us to plan, grow, and allocate resources strategically.
By building clear operational and program budgets, this project will:
-Enable us to serve more individuals through expanded health programming and outreach
-Enable us to build organizational sustainability by increasing our capacity to have paid staff, we are currently entirely volunteer based
-Help us sustain and grow signature initiatives like The Black Man’s Health Festival® and community health events
-Strengthen our ability to secure funding and partnerships, ensuring more free or low-cost resources reach those who need them most
-Improve internal decision-making so we can respond more effectively to community health needs in real time
Ultimately, the volunteer’s work will translate into real, tangible impact: more screenings, more conversations around mental and physical health, and more Black men empowered to advocate for their well-being. Our programs create spaces where men feel seen, informed, and supported—and stronger financial infrastructure ensures those spaces not only continue, but expand.
For a volunteer, this is an opportunity to contribute behind the scenes in a way that fuels frontline impact. The budgets and tools developed won’t sit on a shelf—they will actively guide how we invest in communities, save lives through early detection and awareness, and build a future where better health outcomes are the norm, not the exception.
To prepare, we have already gathered key financial documents, including recent budgets, expense reports, and revenue data, and we are organizing these materials so they are easy for a volunteer to review. We have also begun identifying our core programs and cost centers to help streamline the development of program-level budgets.
We will designate a primary point of contact who will be responsive, organized, and available for regular check-ins. This person will coordinate feedback from our team, ensure timely communication, and help keep the project on track. We are prepared to meet consistently (2–5 hours per week, as needed), provide timely input, and make decisions efficiently so the volunteer’s time is used effectively.
In terms of implementation, the tools and budgets developed through this project will be actively used by our leadership team for planning, resource allocation, and fundraising. We are committed to integrating these outputs into our ongoing operations and ensuring staff are trained and comfortable maintaining them moving forward.
Overall, we view this as a collaborative partnership and are excited to work closely with a skilled volunteer to build practical tools that will have a lasting impact on our organization.
