My goal for this project is to complete a nonprofit finance manual focused on nonprofit financial controls and best practices. It should include recommendations on how to handle, at a minimum, the following:
Cash Deposits
Electronic Deposits
Income Recognition
Grants Revenue Recognition
Capitalization & Depreciation of Fixed Assets
Accounts Payable
Petty Cash
Corporate Credit Cards
Purchasing & Procurement
Electronic Backup
Bank Correspondence Review
1099-Misc. and 1096 Forms
Annual Audit and Tax Preparation
Budgeting and Financial Reporting
Payroll
Contract Labor Policy
Record Retention

The volunteer who works on this project will have the satisfaction of knowing that their work will help keep a 20+ year old organization that serves nearly 65 other nonprofits on the job. Once we have a template for management documents like this, we often share them with members and newly formed organizations who need help in this area. It's possible this volunteer's efforts will end up as a sample of its kind in the members only section of our website.

We currently have a finance manual, but it hasn't been updated in years. We are a small organization, only one FTE, so we use contractors for our bookkeeping and independent audit. We believe using our existing document will be a big help in creating an updated version that we can have reviewed by a pro bono attorney. Our organization is getting prepared for a change in executive leadership with in 12 months and want to be sure we have all the organizational and management documents in place for the new person.
