YCS Financial Analysis
As a growing nonprofit, we want to be thoughtful and responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us. While we manage our day-to-day finances, we’re looking for experienced guidance to help us step back, review our financial picture, and put stronger systems in place—especially around budgeting and tax compliance.
-Specifically, we’re hoping a volunteer can help with:
-Reviewing our current financial information, including income and expenses
-Developing a realistic annual operating budget aligned with our programs and capacity
-Providing guidance and support related to nonprofit tax filings (including Form 990), such as what’s required, how to prepare, and how to stay compliant
-Conducting a high-level financial management assessment and offering practical recommendations for improvement
-Advising on accounting system considerations or next steps, as needed, to support future growth
The goal is to leave this project with a clear, board-ready annual budget, confidence around our tax filing responsibilities, and actionable recommendations we can continue to use moving forward.
We expect this project to be short and focused, likely completed within 72 hours to one week, depending on availability. We’re flexible with scheduling and will coordinate virtual check-ins as needed to keep things moving efficiently. Our team will provide all relevant financial documents, organizational information, and timely feedback to make the best use of the volunteer’s time.
This work is foundational to our mission. Strong financial practices help us remain accountable, build trust with donors and partners, and ensure we can responsibly support more students by removing financial barriers to participation in school-based extracurricular activities.
A well-built budget allows us to plan intentionally, allocate funds wisely, and respond consistently to student needs throughout the year. It also gives donors, churches, and community partners the transparency they often ask for, showing exactly how resources are being used to remove financial barriers for middle and high school students who want to participate in school-based extracurricular activities like sports and band.
While the main focus is budgeting, this is also our first time navigating nonprofit tax filings. Having light guidance or confirmation that we’re on the right track adds confidence and helps ensure we’re meeting basic requirements without overcomplicating the process.
For volunteers, the impact is clear and tangible. Your work will help create a budget we can confidently share with our board and donors, build trust with supporters, and ensure funds are directed where they matter most. Ultimately, this project helps more students stay connected to their schools, build confidence, and take part in opportunities they might otherwise miss.
Our leadership team is fully aligned on the importance of strengthening our financial practices, and we’re ready to move forward. We’ve already gathered the key materials a finance volunteer would need, including our EIN, IRS determination letter, bank statements, income and expense summaries, prior filings (if applicable), and governing documents.
We have a clear understanding of what we’re looking to accomplish with this project—an annual budget, clarity around tax filing requirements, and practical recommendations we can implement right away. Because the scope is well defined, we’re able to make decisions quickly and keep the work moving.
We’ll provide timely feedback, be available for check-ins, and respect the volunteer’s time and expertise. We value clear communication and see this as a true collaboration.
Most importantly, we’re prepared to use the outcomes. The annual budget will be shared with our board and used to guide our financial decisions, and the tax guidance will help us stay compliant and organized moving forward. Any recommendations provided will be documented and incorporated into our ongoing financial practices.
We’re organized, prepared, and committed to making this a positive, high-impact experience for everyone involved.
