Homes for Veterans is seeking an experienced volunteer with deep expertise in federal grant applications, specifically VA grants such as the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, to support our organization through the early stages of pursuing this funding opportunity.

The volunteer will assist our leadership team with strategic guidance and technical expertise, rather than day-to-day writing. We are looking for someone who understands the VA Notice of Funding Opportunity process, federal compliance requirements, eligibility criteria, and competitive positioning for SSVF or similar federal programs.

Specific tasks may include:

-Reviewing the current SSVF Notice of Funding Opportunity and translating requirements into a clear action plan
-Assessing Homes for Veterans’ organizational readiness and eligibility for SSVF funding
-Advising on program design and alignment with SSVF priorities, including homelessness prevention and housing stability
-Identifying documentation, policies, and data needed for a competitive federal application
-Providing feedback on draft narrative sections, budget considerations, and required attachments
-Offering best practices and lessons learned from successful VA or federal grant applications

This project is time-bound and advisory in nature, suitable for a volunteer who can contribute 2–5 hours per week over several weeks and provide high-level expertise that will strengthen our application strategy and long-term federal funding capacity.
By volunteering on this project, you will help Homes for Veterans take a critical step toward expanding and strengthening housing stability for veterans who are at risk of homelessness or falling through the cracks of traditional systems.

Homes for Veterans serves veterans whose disabilities, illnesses, or aging challenges make their own homes unsafe. Many of the veterans we support are the same individuals served by SSVF programs or those who narrowly miss eligibility, wait months for assistance, or are denied support because their needs do not fit within strict federal criteria.

Your expertise will help us build the bridge between housing stability services and physical accessibility, two areas that are deeply connected but rarely funded together. By guiding us through the complexities of SSVF and VA grant requirements, you will help ensure that veterans who receive housing assistance can actually remain housed safely, independently, and with dignity.

Your contribution will directly shape our ability to:
-Align our programs with VA and federal housing stability initiatives
-Determine readiness and competitiveness for SSVF funding
-Build internal systems that meet federal and VA standards
-Strengthen partnerships with VA-funded providers and community stakeholders

This work will enable Homes for Veterans to sustainably expand services for veterans who are housing insecure, including those living with mobility limitations, chronic illness, or service-related injuries. Ultimately, your guidance will help prevent homelessness before it starts by addressing one of its most overlooked causes: unsafe and inaccessible housing.
We have a dedicated team member for the project who will provide you with the document that needs to be reviewed in an easily shareable format. (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.) We'll also send you the proposal and application guidelines.

Homes for Veterans has experience collaborating with institutional partners, county and state stakeholders, and veteran service organizations, and we are actively building relationships with VA and housing stability partners to support future SSVF alignment. While this would be our first Taproot Plus engagement focused on federal grants, we bring a strong track record of executing on strategic guidance and translating it into operational action.
