Heroic Gardens is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that delivers evidence-based horticultural therapy, community garden programming, and Veteran-centered nature initiatives. Our work is rooted in both science and human connection—meeting people where they are and removing barriers to healing.
As our programs and funding opportunities grow, we are seeking a trusted volunteer partner to help ensure up to 6 grant submissions in Q1/Q2 are:
Clear and compelling (are we answering the grant objective?)
Strategically aligned with funder priorities
Consistent in tone, metrics, and messaging
Competitive at a regional and national level
What We Need Help With
Reviewing draft grant proposals for:
Clarity, flow, and narrative strength
Alignment between goals, activities, and outcomes
Consistency in metrics, language, and positioning
Editing for concision, funder fit, and readability
Flagging gaps, redundancies, or opportunities to strengthen responses
Occasionally advising on framing for new grant opportunities

This project leverages your ability to review and refine, you will not be writing from scratch. We have strong content, data, and institutional knowledge in place. It may be helpful for you to develop a tip sheet for our grants, essentially some guidelines that all future reviewers might use to ensure consistency in the review and editing process.
Grant funding is essential to sustaining and expanding Heroic Gardens’ programs. Your support will directly influence our ability to:
Provide free horticultural therapy to Veterans and families
Expand community-based healing spaces
Build long-term organizational sustainability
Your behind-the-scenes expertise will have very real, on-the-ground impact.
We have a dedicated team member for the project who will provide you with the document that needs to be reviewed in an easily shareable format. (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.) We'll also send you the proposal and application guidelines, plus a list of our historic grants we've applied for, and sample submitted grants.

Organization Mission

Heroic Gardens is a Pennsylvania-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, established in 2018, dedicated to connecting U.S. Veterans, their caregivers, and family members with the healing power of plants and nature through trauma-responsive, community-driven therapeutic horticulture programs. The organization’s mission is to help Veterans and their families grow healthier, more connected lives through the incorporation of plants and nature. Given the high prevalence of trauma, PTSD, and elevated suicide risk among Veterans, there is a clear need for complementary, accessible, non-pharmacological interventions that support mental health, stress reduction, social reconnection, and sense of purpose. Evidence indicates that horticultural therapy and other nature-based interventions may deliver meaningful reductions in stress, depression, and PTSD-related symptoms, and may enhance protective factors — such as community connection, physical activity, grounding, and resilience.
