Technology for Families in Need (TechFIN) wants to build a strong, organized pipeline of in-kind computer hardware donors to support our device distribution and repair initiatives. With a skilled volunteer, we aim to create a structured lead generation system that identifies and qualifies potential partners such as corporations, schools, and tech refurbishers with surplus laptops, desktops, and related equipment.

We are seeking a Taproot volunteer to help us research and source potential in-kind donors for computer hardware, focusing on organizations located in New York and New Jersey. The project will involve conducting online research to identify companies in these regions that may have surplus technology or sustainability initiatives, and compiling those leads into a centralized list such as Google Sheets. The volunteer will also note relevant contact information, donation guidelines, and partnership opportunities.

The project goal is to generate at least 10 qualified leads for potential device procurement. This work will help TechFIN expand its regional reach, strengthen our donor relationships, and ensure that more families receive the technology they need to thrive.
This project directly supports TechFIN’s mission to expand digital access for families, students, and community members who lack reliable technology. Every donated computer we distribute has a tangible impact.

By sourcing new in-kind donors of computer hardware, the volunteer will play a key role in strengthening our ability to meet this growing demand. Each lead identified represents a potential pipeline of laptops, desktops, and other devices that can be refurbished and redistributed to households in need across New York.

This project is not just about research, it’s about building real opportunities for digital equity. The volunteer’s work will directly translate into more devices reaching more families, supporting TechFIN’s long-term vision of ensuring that access to technology is not determined by income or zip code.
The volunteer will work directly with TechFIN’s Executive Director, who will provide guidance, context, and feedback throughout the project. We will ensure the volunteer has access to any background materials or data needed to understand our mission, past donors, and preferred equipment types. Once the list of at least 10 qualified leads is developed, our team will immediately begin outreach and relationship-building to convert those prospects into active in-kind donors.

TechFIN has a history of successful collaborations through both community partnerships and volunteer engagements, and we are intentional about making every pro bono collaboration purposeful, efficient, and impactful. Our goal is to make this experience meaningful for the volunteer while producing tangible outcomes that expand digital access for families in need.

Organization Mission

TechFIN helps narrow the digital divide by addressing a major hurdle to computer hardware ownership: its cost. By collecting used laptops and desktop computers, in bulk, from corporations, we are able to revitalize these machines and distribute them to low-income households at no cost to them. Our solution is sustainable, scalable, and cost-effective.
